Chelan Fall Barrel Tasting

Chelan Fall Barrel Tasting

The Lake Chelan Wine Growers Association sponsors a number of events throughout the year. We were in Lake Chelan Thanksgiving weekend and took advantage of the Chelan Fall Barrel Tasting. In addition the regular wine tasting, they were offering tastes of the wines right out of the barrel.

This weekend had it all: great views, long conversations at the tasting counter, the smell of oak barrels wet with wine and wood smoke in the morning air. There’s a little bit of breathing room everywhere you go and everyone you meet has relaxed into post-harvest glee. Discover something for every palate as 19 of Lake Chelan’s boutique wineries partner to present this celebrated annual event. Here’s a quick review of just five of the wineries we were able to visit.

Cairdeas Winery

Our first taste from the barrel was at the Cairdeas Winery where they were serving their 2014 port-style Petite Syrah. Charlie and Lacey Lybecker founded this small artisan winery in West Seattle in 2009. After visiting Lake Chelan on vacation, they fell in love with the area and made the move in 2012.

Cairdeas is an ancient Gaelic word meaning friendship, goodwill or alliance. They believe in all three. “Good wine should be shared with friends, goodwill spread at every opportunity, and alliances created with those who share our passion.” However you pronounce it, it sounds good to me.

Vin du Lac Winery

The Vin du Lac Winery hosted a wine tasting and Hors d’oeuvres event for the wine club at their processing facility down by the river. They featured their 2013 Barrel Select Chardonnay and their 2010 Lehm Chelan Rouge for Chelan Fall Barrel Tasting. Winemaker Marc Leahy combines both science and art into his winemaking. On a hill with a beautiful view of the lake, Vin du Lac also has a tasting room and bistro in Lake Chelan. Chef Joseph Nagy uses fresh and local products to create a great eating experience.

Karma Vineyards

Karma Vineyards on the south side of the lake boasts beautiful landscaping with patio, waterfalls and koi pond. Since we were there Thanksgiving weekend and it was too cool to sit outside, wine tasting was inside in their unique underground wine cave. The underground cave provides a substantial building with little impact to the surrounding area. Karma was established in 2007 and is one of the few Methode Champenoise wineries in the state of Washington and they are passionate about producing their sparkling in the French tradition.

Tsillan Cellars

Tsillan Cellars is a landmark as you come into Chelan from the South. On the slopes of the south shore with breathtaking views, this Tuscan inspired winery provides an exceptional environment for wine tasting. Cascading waterfalls and natural stone bridges surround a pleasant outdoor seating area. Their wine tasting room is open daily from 12 to 5. For the fall barrel tasting event, they were giving samples of their 2013 Estate Syra Malbec. We went back in the evening and had a wonderful meal in their restaurant, Sorrento’s.

Lake Chelan WineryLake Chelan Winery

Lake Chelan Winery is located on Highway 150 on the north side of the lake on the way to Manson. This popular tasting room is open daily from 11:00 to 5:00 and later on weekends. The Lake Chelan Cheese shop inside the tasting room provides an amazing selection of cheese. In addition to the normal wine selection, they were serving their 2013 Malbec from the barrel.
In the summer we have enjoyed their barbeque in the vineyard.
