I grew up in Sandpoint and finally got my act together to do the Gold Hill Hike Sandpoint Idaho for the first time last summer. It’s a major land form that dominates the landscape south of Sandpoint. So many times I’ve driven past on US Highway 95 and wondered what it was like up there. I’m glad I lived out my fantasy at last. The view and landscape at Gold Hill are so interesting, I hope to return again soon. Whether you’re a photographer or just a gaper, the changing light conditions assure the view is never quite the same.
If you prefer an easier trek to the top, drive south to Sagle on US 95 to hike the upper trail head. The upper Gold Hill trail hike is much shorter and more level. Get an early start. The morning of my Gold Hill hike I saw a handsome whitetail buck in velvet, a doe, three elk and a black bear, but scarcely a human.
From Sandpoint, take Hwy. 95 south 2 miles to Bottle Bay Road; turn left onto Bottle Bay Road and go 4.8 miles to the trail head located on the right.
Access to upper trail head: Take Hwy. 95 south 6 miles to Sagle Road; turn left onto Sagle Road and go 6 miles to Contest Mtn. Road 2642 (located on the left at the hairpin turn); turn left onto Road 2642 and go 6 miles to the trail head.
