Featured Unique and Historic Local Accommodations
Touch the Pacific Northwest will also feature unique and locally owned establishments that excel in comfort, ambiance and character… like the historic Weinhard Hotel in Dayton Washington. Our crew stayed at the Weinhard while filming a segment in May on the Palouse Region of Washington, and iconic Palouse Falls.
The elegant Weinhard Hotel was built in 1890 by Jacob Weinhard, the nephew of Henry Weinhard of the Henry Weinhard Brewery in Portland. Jacob had come to Dayton in 1880 after completing an apprenticeship with his uncle and established the Jacob Weinhard Brewery in Dayton in 1883. Jacob’s brewing business prospered over the next decade and and following construction of the Weinhard Saloon and Lodge, he added a “malt house” with an outdoor beer garden and an opera house downtown.
Upon its opening, the local newspaper described the Weinhard as “perhaps the finest in the State of Washington, and we doubt if there is anything of the kind to surpass it on the Pacific Coast.” Colorful murals of the scenic Pacific Northwest adorned the interior.
The Weinhard enjoyed quite a heyday, but its popularity gradually declined until the old landmark was closed in 1963. The Weinhard Saloon and Lodge was reborn in 1994 to become the Weinhard Hotel. The new owners undertook a complete renovation, taking great care to maintain the historic authenticity of the original lodge. The wainscoting, doors, moldings and hardware were all recycled. The proprietors took great care to add all the modern comforts (like wi-fi) while allowing guests an escape to the romantic past.
Today’s Weihard Hotel is an elegant victorian brick building with richly furnished lobby, guest rooms and espresso bar–reminiscent of the old saloon. The espresso bar serves excellent coffee and delicious home-made muffins, with a delightful gift shop and art gallery. A truly outstanding feature of the Hotel is the rooftop garden, which includes a “kissing bench,” propane fire table, gazebo, wall fountain, and a dazzling assortment of blooming plants from May through October.
If you haven’t been to Dayton, Washington yet, put it on your list. A quaint and colorful small town on the edge of the Palouse and at the foot of the Blue Mountains. Historic Dayton makes you feel like it’s 1960 again with it’s small town relaxed pace. There is much to do right in the Dayton area: iconic Palouse Falls, wineries, museums, a small ski area, etc. Our crew fell in love with Dayton and the Weinhard Hotel, and we thing you will too!
